In the early days, these containers were made from inexpensive wood, but over time, they have gone through several transformations. Wood eventually gave way to steel wire crates, but those rusted quickly. Eventually, PVC became the material of choice for the crates. The ones you see now are still made from PVC, which is durable yet lightweight. Another transformation is happening in the industry, with new packaging that is currently being adopted by those in the dairy business. PVC cannot go to the landfills, so the crates are being sold to companies and individuals who have discovered other ways to use them. Now you will see colorful PVC containers sold in stores for uses other than to carry milk. You can put hanging files in them, stack them for open-air shelving, or place them around your house for a variety of purposes.
